About the exhibition

Marine Transgressions is a collection of fifteen large drawings of American cities experiencing sea-level rise caused by climate change, paired with an accompanying video that tracks the movement of the water as it encroaches on the land, transgressing civic boundaries. The drawings are accompanied by a large table in the exhibition space, where a plotter machine equipped with a pen creates intricate drawings under the control of a compact computer and algorithm. The pen swiftly traces numerous lines on the paper, gradually revealing recognizable, oceanic forms. As the drawings accumulate, they are displayed on the wall, with a new piece added daily. This evolving collection of paper and lines is a part of LeMercier’s ongoing exploration of plotter machines, delving into the relationship between humans and machines, and between humans and art in an age of digital production.

Studio LeMercier: Marine Transgressions is organized by the Mary M. Torggler Fine Arts Center in collaboration with Superblue.
