About the Exhibition
In the video Magic Moments (Technology/Transformation: Wonder Woman), Alex McQuilkin examines the construction of female identity in Western culture, repurposing footage of spinning women often used to advertise clothing and perfumes. Referencing the history of both cinema and video art, McQuilkin engages the complex relationship between consumer culture and female identity, questioning where images of feminine youth, beauty, and happiness originate.
In a practice spanning videos, drawings, objects, and installations, Alex McQuilkin combines psychoanalysis, maudlin sentimentality, dark humor, and deep sincerity to examine the construction of female identity in Western culture. Her work has been exhibited internationally since 2000 and she currently serves as Assistant Professor of Art at Binghamton University, State University of New York (Binghampton, NY).
