ARTCNU
Christopher Newport’s Department of Fine Art and Art History seeks to inspire creative artists and critical thinkers. The department provides a strong foundation in art history and studio art through a rigorous curriculum that distinguishes ArtCNU graduates as innovative thinkers and artists, ethical professionals, and articulate communicators in the fine arts disciplines.
Chaired by Dr. Michelle Erhardt, the department offers majors in studio art (concentrations in graphic design, photography and video art, and 2D and 3D media) and art history. In addition, the department also houses the minor in museum studies and the master of arts in teaching program in art, all in the brand new facilities of the Torggler. The state-of-the-art studios include exceptional spaces for drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, metal casting, mixed-media work, photography (including a darkroom), digital media and design, and more.
