About the exhibition
The Torggler’s Microgallery has been transformed into a camera obscura! Used for centuries by artists as a drawing aid, a camera obscura in its simplest form is a darkened room or large box with a small hole or lens on one side, through which an image of scenery outside the box is projected onto the opposite wall. The projected image is upside down and reversed. Portable camera obscuras, which were precursors to the modern camera, were produced beginning in the seventeenth century and were appreciated for their ability to assist artists in capturing realistic detail as well as perspective.
The Torggler’s camera obscura is presented as an extension to the photography on view in Ansel Adams: Compositions in Nature exhibition.
